"Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I'm calling to urge Commissioner [NAME] to oppose Evergy's proposed Buffalo Flats transmission line route in Docket 26-EKCE-0148-STG. This 133-mile line would cut through the Flint Hills — one of the last remaining Tallgrass Prairies on earth — to export wind energy to Missouri. It does not deliver a single kilowatt of power to the Kansas communities it crosses. Kansas ratepayers would bear 16.5% of an estimated $2.2 billion regional cost, with no local benefit. Evergy's own environmental biologist dismissed the Flint Hills as unworthy of protection. This project should not be approved on this route. Please protect the prairie. Please vote no on this route. Thank you."

Subject: Oppose Buffalo Flats Route — Docket 26-EKCE-0148-STG

Dear Commissioner [NAME], I am writing to urge you to oppose Evergy's proposed Buffalo Flats transmission line route in Docket 26-EKCE-0148-STG.

This project would run 160-foot transmission towers through the Flint Hills — one of the world's last remaining Tallgrass Prairie ecosystems. Less than 4% of the original Tallgrass Prairie still exists. The Flint Hills represent an irreplaceable ecological and cultural heritage that belongs to all Kansans.

The proposed route raises serious concerns:

  • Kansas ratepayers would shoulder 16.5% of an estimated $2.2 billion regional cost — while the line delivers zero power to the Kansas counties it runs through. It exists solely to ship wind energy to Missouri.

  • The project bypasses competitive bidding on a $484 million investment. Comparable projects have shown savings of up to 40% through open bids.

  • The route runs through territory protected by Governor Kelly's moratorium on wind development in the Flint Hills, undermining the intent of that protection.

  • Eminent domain is being threatened against generational family farms and ranches — including the Magnolia Ranch, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1943.

  • Evergy's own environmental biologist testified that the Flint Hills does not warrant treatment as a protected ecosystem — a position that contradicts decades of conservation science.

I urge the Commission to reject this route and demand a process that protects Kansas ratepayers, Kansas land, and Kansas heritage. Please protect the prairie.

Sincerely, [YOUR NAME] [CITY, STATE] [OPTIONAL: Your connection to the land or issue]

Contact all three commissioners — every message matters. If you have a personal connection to the land, the prairie, or the affected communities, mention it. Your voice as a Kansan (or as someone who cares about this place) carries weight.
